Virginia City Area MT 9/11/04
You can use this nifty sign to identify the mountain peaks below. Hey who say's this isn't an interactive website.
A panoramic view of the Madison Valley.
We stopped at Virginia City to visit the museum. When visiting the area you should also check out nearby Nevada City. It's a great little ghost town.
A view down on Virginia City from Boot Hill.
The area is rich in mining history and probably still a few nuggets.
One of the old dredges long since stranded no longer chews up the country side.
This old dynamite shack once used to store explosives stands alone as modern excavators work around it. Jim and I took advantage of the newly chewed up land to scrounge up a few garnets in the dirt.
Time to head up into the mountains for a little exploration.
Even after a hundred or so years the frame on this doorway is still square.
Another look.
Old mining mills and cabins litter the country side.
You know... with a little work.
At first we thought this was a mine but it was a cabin built into the side of the hill. Probably used for storage but it could have also been used to live in.
After a bit we came across an old ranch with a little creek running beside it through the tall grass and shrubs. It appeared to contain brook trout which scattered when we approached. How do these fish live when all of this freezes?
Sort of like little house on the prairie. Remember that one?
These guys knew how to build em.
For rent.
