Fishing on Slough Creek 9/8/04
Coyote's are abundant in the park or little wolves as some of the Indians used to call them.
We pull into slough creek campground and interrupted this deer.
We head up Slough creek for some fishing in the pocket water.
Most fish ranged from 7 to 14 inches and very healthy.
Feisty rainbows that spend half of the fight in the air.
We catch all sizes.
Beautiful colors. Many of the fish in slough have parr marks.
Jim having a little fun.
If a fish could fit in a hole or plunge pool it did.
We came, we saw, we caught... don't worry we put em' back.
Time for a quick break streamside.
Fish on.
Watery world.

Foam Ball Ant Hook - Size 14 to 18 Thread - Brown Body - Two foam balls. tied on with white stocking then colored black or brown in this case. Legs - 1 turn of black or grizzly hackle or black angora hair in this case.
This pattern floats really well and took a lot of fish. |
The fish liked the ant pattern. Floats like a cork too.

| After reaching the top of the canyon we sit down for a little break and a drink of water. We could now continue on and fish the first meadow or head back to camp and regroup. I've fished the first meadow before and you usually need extra long 5x or 7x leaders and very small fly's size 20 and under. Sometimes a hopper or small ant will do. The smallest ants we had was a size 16 and will usually get snubbed. Even though the fish are a lot bigger and make for nice photos I've found them to be ragged around the lips from being caught and very sluggish fighters. You also have to contend with other fisherman. Not that I don't like other fisher folk but if I can look up and down the river and see no one all the better. Even though the fish in the canyon pocket water are smaller then the fish in the meadow they are much more lively and when you do get a big fish watch out! |

After a little snack we head to the Lamar for the last hour of light.
This one just didn't want his photo taken.
A cutthroat with a foam winged dry fly.
A nice looking sunset ends another day.
