The "Puffhead"
|
The Puffhead is an adaptation of Gary Lafontaines "Airhead". Essentially a modified Airhead. The Airhead was originally introduced to me by John Sanders as a swap fly. I thought that the fly was odd and really wanted to try it out on an upcoming Yellowstone trip. When I tried the fly on the Lamar river it did pretty well so that night I tied a few. I used a stonefly hook instead of the original (didn't have anything else). I didn't like all of the steps to tying the original fly so I eliminated cutting all of the foam strips the way Gary tied his. The dubbing material is different. Also the body and wing is done different. The next day my brother and I tried the modified version and it did even better yet! In fact it did so well it was the only fly we used the whole rest of the trip. My brother said "I'ts a Puffhead"! It's actually the name a rock parody song I wrote about 14 years ago so we both got a laugh out it. The name stuck. I ended up tying a lot of those that trip. It's a very easy tie. |
Tying Steps:
|
This is what you will need: Thin closed cell packing foam, Natural deer hair, Hairs ear dubbing (I've used many colors), White 6/0 thread, a hair stacker is handy. |

Wrap a base of thread to about midway over the bend of the hook as shown.

Olive dubbing did well.

Now tie in the wing much like an elk hair caddis. Only trim all of the hair as shown above.

Next tie in a foam strip on the bottom sticking out toward the eye of the hook.

Like this.

Do the same for the top.

Like this.

Now tie the foam back in a bullet head style.

Like this.

Trim the foam strip like this on top.

And a little shorter on the bottom.

Now cut the foam into little appendages. Two on top and three on bottom. Cut the middle one on the bottom short.
The Puffhead or modified Airhead.
